San Andreas Earthquake Geology Assignment

Part 1

There is a very seismically active border between the Central Valley and the North American Plate: between the valley and the Pacific Plate is the San Andreas Fault. We can only imagine the destruction that would occur if the San Andreas unlocked an earthquake of magnitude 7 or 8.

What could happen if it did?

Part 2

  1. What earthquake happened in the past in California? How were the local population affected?
  2. What are some of the problems caused by this event that could have been mitigated by proper preparation and planning?
  3. What if this event happened right now? What are things that could be done before a major earthquake hit that would increase your chances for survival?
  4. What is recommended to prepare for that earthquake or how to prepare for an earthquake?
